There is so much to see and experience in Cambodia. One such couple, Colin and Eve Breen travelled to Cambodia a few weeks ago and have kindly sent us their first impressions of this unique destination. 

'Up early as we are travelling to Siam Reap, Cambodia today. Great breakfast at the Old Bangkok Inn.  Got a local taxi to the airport; check in and boarding was hassle-free - nice airport with good shops if you have time to kill. After a short flight of under an hour we arrived in Cambodia. We had not arranged visas in advance as heard it was not necessary, easy to do on arrival. All you need is a passport-style photo and 20 brand new, clean US dollars…..apparently Cambodians do not like tatty or worn notes! We joined the short queue at the visa desk and were soon sorted and on our way. Our Cambodia adventure holiday through Miss Ellies Travel could begin. We had arranged a pick-up with our hotel in advance, and easily found our man outside the arrivals hall. For some reason, we expected a car ….we should have known better, as the guy was carrying a crash helmet! Turned out the transport is actually a moped with a trailer - the Cambodian version of a tuk-tuk! We actually think this is the way to travel anywhere here as it is cheap, fun and a fantastic experience. Just a 30 minute ride to our hotel - The Golden Banana Resort. There are three sections to the hotel - a B&B, a hotel and the 'resort'. We were in the resort - beautiful poolside room with all the usual facilities you would expect. Our room also had a private roof-garden complete with sun loungers, outdoor shower and stone bath. In the evening we had a walk into town - great location as it was only 5 minutes walk to where the main bars and restaurants were. However, during the short walk we were asked about 50 times if we wanted a tuk-tuk! You just need to say 'no thanks' and they give up so no real hassle. When getting back to the hotel at night, it looks a bit daunting as it down a side street away from the main area, but it still feels safe. Town centre is literally buzzing with plenty of places to eat and drink from very cheap street-side cafes to more up market restaurants…..whatever you want really, but no McDonalds…at least not yet! As we were walking around the area, we noticed a lot of big hotels either newly opened or being built. If you are thinking of travelling to Cambodia we would recommend sooner rather than later as it appears to be changing considerably to cater for the increase in demand. Hopefully the place will maintain it's wonderful charm and elegance, truly a fantastic destination with a lot to offer couples and individual travelers of all ages.
For the ultimate in day time experiences the Siem Reap temples were, to use the word amazing simply does not do them justice. We found ourselves uttering "wow" every five seconds. The one day ticket costs just $20. The guide drops you off at the temples and we were then left to explore on our own (you can have a guided tour with full history but we decided against this option). After a very enjoyable yet incredibly cheap lunch, our guide asked if we would like to visit his home the following day - some people think it may be offensive to refuse, but if it is not something you want to do you should just say no. We did and it was not a problem. However, we did hear that if you really want to see how the Cambodian people live it is a good experience. The final temple we visited was the main one - Angkor Wat. This prompted us to say WOW again….and again! The photographs cannot do this place justice - it is one of the wonders of the world and it is easy to see why.'
