'Arrived Bangkok airport - huge airport, took three attempts to find the exit for taxis! Not our first time here so should have known really! Took public taxi - well organised once you are out of the building; the hotel offered pick-up for approx £21, but we thought that was a little expensive and turned out to be right as it was only about £8.00. Stayed at the Old Bangkok Inn - very close to the Grand Palace. More of a B&B than a hotel, but lovely room, great breakfast and excellent service. Only here for one night, so checked in, quick freshen up and straight out. Went to weekend market which was great - you can get absolutely anything here - from the latest designer trends to snakes and puppies! Found a nice bar in the market where we sat and watched the world go by - being Bangkok, there are plenty of weird and wonderful things to see! The market closes approx 6pm, so after this we tried to get a taxi to Chinatown, but - as we found out - you should discuss with the driver where you are going before you get in, as sometimes they do not want to go the same place as you! Thought we would try walking there, but even though we had three maps, we still managed to get lost and could not get to where we wanted to be! Feeling brave, so we jumped on the sky train. This was surprisingly easy though and we needed have worried. Another short taxi ride later, we were wandering through China Town deciding where to eat. Most restaurants are seafood, and are street-style. If you are not familiar with the street-style restaurants, you will probably walk up and down for two hours before you decide to chance it…however they are very popular, and the quality of food is wonderful. When we arrived back at our hotel, there was big street-party in aid of the Kings birthday, complete with live bands, fireworks, and illuminated floats with ladies in beautiful national dress. Apparently it is the last night of a ten-day party so very fortunate for us to catch it. To sum up, Bangkok is very crowded and hectic - but a great city not to be missed.'
