Costa Rica is a small country that’ll have a big impact on you. Situated between North and South America and its proximity to the equator provides visitors with a tropical climate year-round along with breathtaking scenery and unique wildlife. We'll visit national parks, dip our toes into the cultural and historical heritage, experience a 'Sky Walk' amongst the birds and wildlife in the Cloud Forest - all before some time on the beach to reflect on all we've been lucky to see and experience in this unique destination.

FULL ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN SAN JOSE

Upon arrival at the airport, we will be welcomed and assisted through Migration and Customs. Our driver representative will meet you outside of the airport terminal and will transfer you to your hotel.

DAY 2 - SAN JOSE - TORTUGUERO

Breakfast included at the restaurant of the hotel. Meet and Greet at the lobby of the hotel. The Guide´s group will meet the group and explain them all the services the group has included in their program. He will give each of the members of the group their corresponding information packages with the information of the program they will need to know. After the meeting, depart to the northern Caribbean lowlands, to the dock of Caño Blanco located in Siquirres. By boat you will travel first on the river and then through the canals that run parallel to the coast until Tortuguero National Park. The boat ride provides an excellent chance to take a closer look to wildlife. Upon arrival to Mawamba Lodge, enjoy lunch at the pool restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the museum (at the entrance you will be asked for a donation) as well as the Tortuguero village, which lies in the northeastern corner of the park, on a thin strip of land between the sea and the main canal. Dinner is at the restaurant of the Lodge.

DAY 3 - TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK

Morning boat tour in the Tortuguero Canals. This tour introduces visitors to the rich rainforest and its great array of Wildlife. Early morning hours are a great opportunity to witness the awakening in the forest. Coffee is readily available before departing on the tour in our coffee room. Return for breakfast at the lodge. Then our naturalist guide will take us on a visit to the “Mawamba Park” in our facility that includes the butterfly farms, frog farm and garden, iguana farm, bio-digestor and gardens. This visit is combined with a walk in the trails at the Lodge.

Activities: Boat tour in the tortuguero Canals. Explore the rainforest.

DAY 4 - TORTUGUERO - SARAPIQUI

After enjoying a delicious breakfast depart with the boat back to Caño Blanco pier where we will meet our bus. Lunch will take place on the way, in a restaurant located in Guapiles town. Following this meal continue with the journey to the northern Caribbean lowlands, to Sarapiquí town. Located just 1.30 hours from San Jose, you will find this place blessed with its abundant flora, fauna, and natural rivers. Sarapiquí will certainly enchant you with its dense vegetation and local countryside flavor. The constant rain keeps the region always green. You will surely love to wake up with the birds singing and the earth still humid as the sun rises. Free afternoon to rest by the pool or to enjoy any of the following services offered at the hotel (at an extra cost, not included): horseback ride in the forest of the hotel, canopy tree sliding tour, visit to the butterfly garden or Spa treatments.

DAY 5 - SARAPIQUI - ARENAL

Breakfast is included at the restaurant of the hotel and afterwards we'll depart to Alma Ata Archaeological Park where you will learn about the country’s pre-Columbian heritage. Following this visit continue to the northern lowlands, to La Fortuna, the closest town to the Arenal Volcano. Without a doubt, the majestic Arenal Volcano -one of the most active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere- constitutes the main attraction in this northern region. Its perfect-formed cone and constant eruptions of lava impress visitors from all over the world. Arenal also owes its reputation to the wide variety of activities and interesting natural spots within a short distance of one another. Refreshed by gentle tropical rains, this land stays green and humid almost all year round. The lowlands host gushing rivers, hot springs, lagoons, remote national parks, and plentiful wildlife. Their climate and terrain also provide perfect conditions for agriculture - some of the most advanced in the country. In the afternoon we will visit the Tabacón Hot Springs to relax in the thermal water heated by the heart of the volcano. Tabacon is an eco-secluded bathing resort housing an assortment of natural mineral thermal pools

DAY 6 - MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST

Monteverde means "Green Mountain", most appropriate name to introduce visitors to the wildlife sanctuary it preserves. The community, secluded on a 1400 meter-high (4594 ft) plateau, was founded in 1951 by a group of North American Quakers. Although some of the original virgin forest was cleared for dairy farming, the founder’s environmental consciousness, together with help from private organizations, led to the creation of a biological preserve that hosts one of the richest ecological systems in the country. Free afternoon to rest or to sign on any of the activities available in the region (not included, at an extra cost) such as: bird watching, canopy touring, hiking, and horseback riding.

DAY 7 - MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST RESERVE

We’ll explore further in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve where we will do a walk on the Sendero Bosque Nuboso. The reserve is home to over 100 species of mammals, more than 400 species of birds, including the Quetzal and 30 local hummingbird species, and 120 species of amphibians and reptiles. This reserve hosts one of the richest ecological systems and one of the most important virgin cloud forests in the country. A well-developed trail system will provide us a good selection of hiking possibilities for this day. Hiking time: 3 hours Difficulty: easy – moderate. In the afternoon visit to the Sky Walk, a complex of suspended bridges, platforms and paths, built within the cloud forest that allows the observation of the flora and fauna from ground level all the way up to the treetops. This system offers a great opportunity to learn about the complexity and beauty of tropical forests in a safe and comfortable manner. The trail will take across 6 hanging bridges, the longest about 300m (900 feet) long. Fabulous farewell dinner.

DAY 8 - TAMARINDO BEACH

We’ll depart Departure after breakfast from the mountains to the pacific coast, to Tamarindo beach located in northern Guanacaste. Driving time 3.30 hours Check in at the Tamarindo Diria Resort. IMPORTANT: this day the bus and the guide return to San Jose, the group will remain on their own from this day up to Day 10.

DAY 9 - TAMARINDO BEACH

Enjoy a day of leisure at the beautiful Tamarindo Beach Resort. Tamarindo has all the amenities of a Costa Rican beach town: surf, sand and sun, sun, sun. But it offers much more. It is the ideal place for honeymoons and weddings, couples, and families, and wonderfully suited to eco-adventures. Tamarindo offers first class sport fishing, sailing, surfing, golf, ATV tours, turtle watching, diving, horseback riding, canopy tours, jungle boat rides, beauty spa, an art gallery and crafts and pottery stores. A multi-cultural community, Tamarindo boats several bakeries, an outdoors vegetable market and more than 40 restaurants. DAY 10 - TAMARINDO BEACH - DEPARTURE FLIGHTS

Soak up the last few rays of Costa Rican sunsine or stroll along the beach before our transfers to Liberia international airport for your onward flight. Approx transfer time to Liberia Airport: 1hr.

Important Information

  • Tour includes international return airfare from London Heathrow Airport [LHR] to San Jose [SJO] and return from Liberia Airport [LIB] to London Heathrow Airport [LHR].
  • Visas are not required for citizens of most countries in America and Western Europe. However it is always advisable to check with the Costa Rica embassy in your country for current information.
  • You will need an overnight bag for use when we visit Tortuguero as the only way onto the island is on small boats. Large luggage will be stored whilst we are in Tortuguero.
  • Please let The Big Journey Company know prior to travelling if you have any medical needs or take any medication that we need to be made aware of to ensure that you have a safe and pleasant tour.
  • Check in is after 2-3pm and check out is before 10am unless otherwise specified in the itinerary.
